<h2>The position</h2><p>A PhD position is available at<strong> </strong>the <a href="https://en.uit.no/enhet/its?p_dimension_id&#61;88141" rel="nofollow">Department of Technology and Safety</a> (ITS)<strong>,</strong> UiT The Arctic University of Norway for candidates interested in the human factors associated with remotely operated and autonomous maritime vessels. This position offers the opportunity for a candidate to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in this rapidly advancing domain.</p><p>ITS is organized under the <a href="https://en.uit.no/enhet/ntfak?p_dimension_id&#61;88131" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Science and Technology</a> and is located at three campuses: Tromsø, Bardufoss and Harstad. The department has approximately 90 employees and approximately 500 students. It offers undergraduate, master, and PhD programs as well as research in the areas of nautical science, aviation, societal safety, environment, and international preparedness.</p><p>The position is for a period of three years. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The candidate, once employed, is required to obtain admission into the <a href="https://en.uit.no/education/program/661186/phd_programme_in_nautical_operations" rel="nofollow">National Joint PhD Program in Nautical Operations</a>, and complete all the necessary components and requirements to obtain a PhD degree.</p><p>The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.</p><br /><h2>The position’s field of research</h2><p>This PhD position is funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) through the research project titled “Reframing Education and Competence Model for Remote Maritime Operations (REFRAME)”. The project explores the effects of digitalization and remotely controlled ship operations on maritime competence. It also aims to assess emerging skill needs, define aligned training paradigms, and conceptualize pedagogical frameworks tailored to meet the evolving competence prerequisites engendered by advancements in remote and autonomous maritime operations.</p><p>As a PhD candidate on this research project, you are expected to conduct research aligned with the project’s objectives and tasks. This could involve investigating Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), examining the implications of high-degree autonomy in maritime operations, and analyzing the evolving roles and skill prerequisites for maritime professionals within the context of remotely controlled autonomous ships. The candidate, as a part of the project team, is expected to collaborate on research design, data collection and analysis, co-author scientific papers, and represent the project at relevant conferences and workshops.</p> <p>The applicants must present a description outlining the academic basis of the PhD project. The project description shall not exceed<strong> 5</strong> pages, literature references included. It must include a description of the topic, research question(s) and a reasoning of the choices. It should also indicate the methodologies to be used. Those with lower grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for PhD education</li></ul><p>Applicants must document fluency of in English and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.  Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is also beneficial.</p><p>In addition, it would be advantageous for the candidate to possess navigation experience, preferably accompanied by deck officer Certificate of Competency (CoC), as this competence can be highly beneficial for comprehending the human factor challenges involved in maritime navigation and operations.</p><p>We will also emphasize motivation and personal suitability for the position. The project description will also be considered. In addition, other experience of significance for the completion of the doctoral programme may be given consideration.</p><p>As many people as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.</p><br /><h2>Admission to the PhD programme </h2><p>For employment in the PhD position, you must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme <a href="https://uit.no/phd-en#innhold_676672" rel="nofollow">National Joint PhD Program in Nautical Operations </a><a href="https://uit.no/phd-en#innhold_669334" rel="nofollow">and participate in organized doctoral studies </a>within the employment period.</p><p>Admission normally requires: </p><ul><li>A bachelor&#39;s degree of 180 ECTS and a relevant master&#39;s degree, or an integrated master&#39;s degree.</li></ul><p>UiT normally accepts higher education from countries that are part of the Lisbon Recognition Convention.</p> <p>A weighted grade average for the master&#39;s degree equal to B (3,5) or better is normally required for admission. Exceptions to these admission rules can be considered if the candidate has a minimum grade average of C (3.0) and can document particular suitability for a PhD education.
