As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.</p><p>Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.</p><br /><h2>About the project</h2><p>We are looking for a 3-year PhD candidate within the cutting-edge field of “welding of high-strength steels for renewable energy applications”. Norway has been significantly investing in sustainable energy production and transportation to minimize CO2 emissions. This project aims to investigate high-productivity welding solutions primarily for the application of high-strength steels in hydrogen production and transportation. The project will require welding of steels using different techniques such as GMAW and laser-arc hybrid. The study shall be supported by numerical modelling and thermodynamic calculations. In the next step, the welds shall be characterized using advanced microscopy techniques and mechanically tested in air and hydrogen environments. The outcomes of the study, such as welding procedure, modelling approach, microstructure, and performance will be used to develop sustainable solutions for welding of high-strength steels.  </p><p>During the PhD study, the candidate is expected to collaborate with the research institution SINTEF as well as the industrial partner Equinor, present his/her research results in national and international forums, and write high-quality research papers. Possible placement of the PhD candidate may be expected for passing relevant courses or/and performing research in universities and research centres other than NTNU.  </p><br /><h2>Duties of the position</h2><ul><li>Contribute to the development of welding procedures for welding of high strength steel based on the guidelines and standards using conventional as well as innovative welding techniques</li><li>Develop a weld monitoring system to correlate the results with numerical calculations </li><li>Develop basic numerical and thermodynamic modelling to evaluate the process-microstructure-performance relationship in the welded components</li><li>Perform mechanical and microstructural testing, characterization, and analysis to assess the properties and performance of welded components</li><li>Investigate the process and material behaviours, mechanisms, and models to target welding production characteristics and performance considering Design for X concept</li><li>Conduct high-level research and publish it in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences to qualify for a PhD career</li><li>Take part in the mandatory PhD research education programme</li></ul><p>Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.</p><br /><h2>Required selection criteria</h2><ul><li>You must have an academically relevant background within Welding Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Processing, or Metallurgical Engineering</li><li>Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master&#39;s level. Master&#39;s students can apply, but the master&#39;s degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.</li><li>You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master&#39;s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to <a href="https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/Grading&#43;scale" rel="nofollow">NTNU&#39;s grading scale</a>. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. </p><p>The employment period is 3 years.</p><p>For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/doctoral-programme" rel="nofollow">the PhD programme in Engineering</a> within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.</p><p>As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.</p><p>For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.</p><p>The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the <a href="https://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/2017-06-16-67" rel="nofollow">State Employees Act</a>, and <a href="https://www.regjeringen.no/en/topics/foreign-affairs/export-control/id754301/" rel="nofollow">Export control</a>(legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services).
